100 kilometres in 3 days: When Overconfidence Meets Reality
Today is supposed to be a pleasant change. Only 15 kilometres. Yesterday, I noticed arrows in the town, so I know exactly where to start today. Today’s footwear choice is sneakers, but my feet are so swollen that they look at least a size larger. They are unrecognizable. It worries me a little, but I’m no quitter. Carefully, I slip into my sandals, and off we go. It’s just before 8 a.m., early enough to avoid the harsh sun. A smart idea after yesterday.
After half an hour of following the arrows, I realize I’m only a few meters from my hotel. The arrows had led me left and right, through different alleys, only to bring me back close to where I started. It’s a bit frustrating, but at least I got a good look at the town.
Finally, I’m heading into nature, and the view is truly rewarding — except for the cobblestones. They’re everywhere. A few curses slip out, and my pace slows significantly. My blisters popped yesterday, but today, they’ve turned into bruises. Of course, I didn’t bring anything to treat them. For now, it’s not too bad — except that they’re on the soles of my feet, so every step is painful.
