Apartment Hunting in London: The Chaos, Scams & Madness I Wish I Knew Before
Let me tell you something about apartment hunting in London — it’s not for the faint of heart. Forget the glossy pictures you see online or the polite agents you meet at viewings. Behind the scenes, it’s a messy, exhausting, and sometimes downright ridiculous game. And I’ve played it more times than I care to admit.
This is the story of my search for a home in London — a journey filled with shady agents, outrageous demands, hidden fees, and a few near-disasters that made me question my life choices. If you’ve ever tried to rent in London, you’ll probably relate. And if you haven’t yet? Buckle up.
The Agents Who Will Tell You Anything
You know the saying, “Don’t trust the pictures”? In London, don’t trust the agents either. I learned this the hard way. They’ll tell you whatever you want to hear just to get you to sign that contract. One agent looked me dead in the eye and said, “These walls are super thick. You won’t hear a thing.” Then he banged on the wall, and I swear, I thought it would collapse.
To test it, I went into the next room, closed the door, and asked him to speak. I could hear every word.
