People who don’t support you publicly are the ones who talk badly about you privately

Why Do Strangers Support Me More Than My Friends?

3 min readMay 6, 2025

Some days I genuinely try to be the bigger person. I tell myself life is about growth, perspective, learning lessons, looking for silver linings. I really try. But then there are days — like today — when I’m tired. Like, deep-in-my-soul tired. Tired of pretending things are okay when they’re not. Tired of staying calm when I’d rather scream. Tired of being polite in a world that constantly tries me.

Also, yes, my period is coming. No, I don’t think it’s oversharing. It’s called context.

I’m not perfect. Far from it. But seriously — is it just me, or is the world getting more bizarre by the day? The selfishness. The double standards. The silent expectations. The weird, passive-aggressive behaviour from people and companies alike. I’d love to send a few of them to hell, but unfortunately, that’s still frowned upon.

Here’s what I’m currently done with:

– Big companies that don’t want to pay for my work unless I chase them like a debt collector
– Not knowing if I’ll ever be able to afford a home because apparently that’s only for millionaires now
– Friends who send 10 reels a day and get upset when I don’t respond with a laugh emoji
– Friends who call me when they’re bored but don’t have time to meet in person
– People who complain endlessly but never actually try to fix anything
– Brands doing shady stuff and hoping nobody notices
– The Instagram Happiness Olympics
– Couples who pretend they’re perfect but can’t stand each other in real life

Why does it feel like strangers 8,000 kilometres away are more supportive than the people closest to me? Someone I’ve never met in Australia bought my book — the one I poured a year of my life into. My own friends? Haven’t even asked what it’s about.

I support my friends’ projects all the time. I donate, I promote, I show up. Do they do the same? No.
“When’s your book coming out?”
“Will you buy it?”
“…No.”

Btw, my travelogue “Never-ending journey” by Nicole Venglovicova is coming out May 7! Pre-order now on your local Amazon Kindle, if you love:

– faith with sarcasm
- travelling with a plan that goes wrong
– poor decisions with spiritual consequences
– the idea of healing without Instagram quotes

Back to my “friends”!

Are you subscribed to my YouTube channel? No.
Have you liked, commented, shared anything? Still no.

I recently came across this quote:
“People who don’t support you publicly are the ones who talk badly about you privately.”
That hit. Hard.

Maybe it’s jealousy. I spend my free time learning, creating, travelling on a budget, building things slowly — not because it’s trendy or profitable, but because it brings me joy. And when I share even the tiniest win, the reaction is a flat “aha” or “okay”. No excitement. No encouragement. Just vibes.

Thankfully, I have a couple of real ones who genuinely say, “I’m proud of you,” even when my wins are small and quiet. Because most of what I’m doing right now doesn’t pay well (yet). I’m planting seeds. I’m building for the long term. And I believe in it — even when no one else does.

Also: I’m done picking up the phone for people who only call when they’re bored, but never show up when it actually matters. You want to talk? Grab a coffee with me. I’m not your emotional support hotline.

I’m tired of wasting hours figuring out if some “business opportunity” is legit or just another nicely packaged scam.

I’m tired of people showing off their designer bags and luxury cars to distract from unresolved issues they refuse to deal with.

And I’m especially tired of people who never take accountability for their own lives.
“Oh, but my parents didn’t love me.”
Yes, that’s awful. But you’re not 10 anymore. At some point, healing becomes your responsibility.

The truth is, the only person you can fully rely on is yourself. Your biggest fan has to be you. Your most consistent supporter? Also you.

And above all — God.
Amen.
